Guide to Sant Jose (San Josep)

San Jose has the highest mountain on Ibiza, Sa Talaia, which is 475 meters high. It also boasts one of the finest examples of Ibiza style architecture in the form of the spectacular whitewashed church. The church building has more than its fair share of history. It was commissioned in 1726 but due to several interruptions was not completed until 1731. The original alter piece was burned in 1936 at the beginning of the civil war, however a replica now stands in its place. Alongside the simplistic beauty of the building, it is still very much the spiritual centre of the community. Children can often be seen playing outside in the square and it is often the central point for local festivities and fiestas.

Serving up a true taste of Sant Jose are Can Bernat Vinya, in front of the church, and Can Llorenc, near the newsagents to the left of the church. Both of these have retained most of the same decoration for around 60 years and offer a true taste of the village’s history.
